Patricia BlinnMSc Candidate
Student’s Name
: Patricia Blinn
Country of Origin: Calgary, AB, Canada
Pre-MSc/PhD Education: Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (UBC), Bachelors of Kinesiology (University of Calgary)

Recent Research Experience:
During my studies in Kinesiology, I designed a mixed-methods study to investigate the effects of motivational interviewing (MI) on physical activity adherence in cancer survivors. This experience was especially enriching because I became trained in MI and was able to administer the intervention myself. I measured participants’ physical activity levels and well-being before and after two MI sessions, as well as analyzed the qualitative data of the recorded MI sessions to tease out common themes regarding cancer survivor’s participation in exercise (e.g. motives, barriers, etc.).

Current Research:
Currently, I am investigating the effects of yoga therapy on occupational performance (ability to participate in meaningful activities) in cancer survivors. We are measuring occupational performance levels and well-being in a group of cancer survivors before and after a 12-week yoga intervention. This topic is especially close to my heart, as I am a certified yoga instructor with specialized training in cancer.

Why Faculty of Medicine?
The faculty of medicine has a high quality interdisciplinary education with an emphasis on collaboration, allowing for an enriching and diverse degree experience. Led by my strong passion for healthcare, it only made sense to pick a faculty at the forefront of health research and innovation.

Future Education Plans and/or Career Goals:
Professionally, I aspire to help grow and define the OT role in cancer outpatient services, an area that is currently underserved by OTs. I hope to grow my clinical skills in this area, and aspire to eventually take a larger role in program planning and health policy in this area. Although oncology is my passion, I also have a strong interest in neurorehabilitation and would love to grow my practice knowledge in this area too. Academically, I hope to continue to contribute to the limited OT-specific oncology research, especially in terms of yoga therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, and occupational performance.
