Keenan Research Summer Student Program
This program provides opportunities for undergraduate and medical students to conduct research in a laboratory and/or clinical setting at St. Michael’s under the supervision of a Principal Investigator (Scientist and/or MD). Students are also involved in educational programming such as seminars, networking activities and a poster competition. Students can participate in the program in a paid or volunteer capacity; it is up to the PI’s discretion and funding which wage you will be paid or if you will conduct your research project as a volunteer.

Students must be enrolled full time in an undergraduate university program at the time of submitting their paperwork to the PI (at minimum application, CV and cover letter – you may be asked for transcriptions or references; please see the website for full details). Students must agree to participate in the program on a full-time basis; summer students work 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday 7.5/hrs per day). The summer student’s project must take place at St. Michael's, unless the Principal Investigator's office/lab is located off-site.

Application period: January 1st, 2015 to March, 31st, 2015 – it is recommended that you apply early in the application period.

Deadline for applications to principal investigators is March 31, 2015.

How do I apply to the program and when can I contact PIs?

  1. Students must first align themselves with a St. Michael's Principal Investigator (PI). Look at the list of PIs and select a few who conduct research relevant to your interests. Find a Principal Investigator at St. Michael’s.
  2. Complete one application form per PI who you will contact. Ensure that you tailor each application form to the specific PI you wish to work with. For example, if you submit an application to a PI saying you are interested in mouse models and that PI’s research does not involve mouse models, you will not be a successful candidate. Please note: It is up to the PI whether they will engage you for the summer and if you will be paid or a volunteer. Application forms will be available on the KRSS webpage mid-October 2015.
  3. Email your application along with your CV, transcripts and references to the respective PI within the application period (January 1st, 2015 to March, 31st, 2015). Please do not contact PIs outside of the application period.

The Office of Research Administration does not assist individuals in finding a Principle Investigator to work with at St. Michael's either as a paid employee or a research volunteer. It is up to the individual to find a Principle Investigator at St. Michael's who is doing work that they are interested in and contact them directly.

Many St. Michael's Principal Investigators are affiliated with the University of Toronto and you can also go through the departments at the university to get a listing of researchers.
