Awarded annually to celebrate and honour faculty members whose research has led to signficant impact beyond academia.

All nominations from the Temerty Faculty of Medicine must be endorsed by the Office of the Vice Dean, Research & Health Science Education. Awarded annually by Columbia University for outstanding basic research in biology or biochemistry.

Preference given to work done in the recent past.

Aims to foster and encourage basic chemical research and to recognize, in a substantial manner, the value of chemical research contributions for the benefit of humankind.

Japan Prize
The Japan Prize is awarded to scientists and engineers from around the world who have made significant contributions to the advancement of science and technology, thereby furthering the cause of peace and prosperity of mankind.

Harvey Prize
Rewards excellence by recognizing recent breakthroughs in science, technology and human health. Typically one prize is given in the physical and information sciences and one in the life sciences annually.

Lasker Awards

Grawemeyer Award in Psychology
Given annually for original and creative ideas that possess clarity, power and that substantially impact the field of psychology. The award is designed to recognize a specific idea, rather than a lifetime of achievement.

Princess of Asturias Awards 
Technical and Scientific Research Award
Recognizes the work of fostering and advancing research in the field of mathematics, astronomy and astrophysics, physics, chemistry, life sciences, medical sciences, earth and space sciences or technological sciences, including those disciplines corresponding to each of these fields as well as their related technologies.

Canadian Academy of Health Sciences Fellowship
Election to the Fellowship of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) is considered one of the highest honours within Canada’s academic community. Fellows are nominated by their peers and institutions and selected in a competitive process based on their internationally recognized leadership, academic performance, scientific creativity and willingness to serve.

Recognizes the outstanding and creative achievements of researchers in the fields of medicine and life sciences, in particular those contributing to scientific developments in basic or clinical medicine.

Henry Marshall Tory Medal
Royal Society of Canada medal awarded every two years to recognize outstanding research in a branch of astronomy, chemistry, mathematics, physics, or an allied science, carried out mainly in the eight years preceding the date of the award, but all the research of the candidate is taken into account.

Royal Society of Canada medal awarded annually to recognize important research of sustained excellence in any branch of medical sciences.

Rutherford Memorial Medal
Royal Society of Canada medal awarded annually to recognize outstanding research in any branch of physics and chemistry.

Anyone can apply, but some preference will be given to candidates whose age is not over forty in the year of the award.

Community-Based Research Excellence Awards
Recognizes excellence in community-based research, an alternative research approach to traditional academic research that requires incredible dedication, time, energy, and skills. 

There are two awards offered annually; one requires that faculty members be within five years of appointment.

Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships
Recognizes early-stage academic researchers in the natural sciences and engineering and support them to enhance their research capacity, so that they can become leaders in their field and inspire others.

Eligible candidates must have held an independent academic position for 10 years or less as of June 1 of the year of nomination and hold a grant from NSERC.*

Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research
Awarded biennially to up to three young leaders in cancer research who are making significant contributions to the understanding of cancer or are improving the treatment of the disease through basic or clinical research.

Nominees are required to be age 45 or younger on the date of the submission deadline.

Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research
Awarded annually to an individual of international stature who best exemplifies Dr. Henry G. Friesen’s prescience, organizational creativity and broad impact on health research and health research policy.

Killam Prize
Awarded to active Canadian scholars who have made a substantial and distinguished contribution to their respective fields in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences or engineering.

Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Inductee
Inductees are those who have made outstanding contributions to medicine and the health sciences, which have led to extraordinary improvements in human health. Their work may be a single meritorious contribution or a lifetime of superior accomplishments.

Dorothy Killam Fellowships
Supports scholars of exceptional ability by granting them time to pursue research projects of broad significance and widespread interest within the disciplines of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences, engineering or studies linking any of these disciplines.

Nominees are early- to mid-career researchers (typically have completed their PhD no more than 15 years prior).

Steacie Prize for Natural Sciences
Presented annually to a scientist or engineer of 40 years of age or less for outstanding scientific research in the natural sciences carried out in Canada.

Extensions beyond the 40 year age requirement are permitted for official leaves, including parental and sick leave, and must be specified in the nomination letter.

Recognizes and rewards world-class research and artistic creation, prizing contributions of singular impact. Relevant categories: Basic Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics), Biology and Biomedicine.

Royal-Mach-Gaensslen Prize for Mental Health Research
Awarded annually to individuals or teams of up to three researchers for outstanding early-career research in a mental health discipline. 

Individuals under 45 years of age or teams up to three recipients under 45 years of age, who hold an MD (or equivalent) or PhD and are affiliated with Canadian academic or clinical research institutions.

Canada Gairdner Momentum Awards
Recognizes 2 mid-career investigators working in Canada who in their last 6 active years have produced exceptional scientific research contributions with continued potential for impact on human health. 

Individuals who are 10-15 years past their first independent research appointment working in Canada.

Awardees are invited to present their research as part of the Gairdner Science Week events in October.

Awarded biennially for outstanding research in medical education, including all education and training for any health science profession.

Sloan Research Fellowships
Sloan Research Fellowships are two-year fellowships awarded annually in recognition of outstanding early-career faculty who have the potential to revolutionize their fields of study.

Tenure-track, but untenured, faculty in the relevant subject areas.

Robert Koch Award
The prize is awarded annually to researchers for outstanding and internationally recognized scientific achievements, particularly in the fields of microbiology and immunology.

Intended for individuals who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship, the Fellowships provide Fellows with blocks of time in which they can work with as much creative freedom as possible. Fellowships are awarded in support of a single project with a balanced, focused goal.

Lurie Prize in Biomedical Sciences
Foundation for the National Institutes of Health International prize for outstanding achievement in Biomedical Research.

Individuals who are 52 years of age or younger as of January 1 of the year following nomination.

Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences
Recognizes breakthrough research in pure or applied life science research that is distinguished by its excellence, originality, and impact on our understanding of biological systems and processes. Particular emphasis will be placed on research which champions novel approaches and challenges accepted thinking in the biomedical sciences.

Royal Society (UK) Fellowship
The Royal Society is the UK's National Academy of Science, a self-governing Fellowship made up of the most eminent scientists, engineers and technologists from the UK and the Commonwealth. Candidates must have made 'a substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge, including mathematics, engineering science and medical science'.

Wolf Prizes
Major international honours recognizing outstanding scientists and artists "for achievements in the interest of mankind and friendly relations among peoples, irrespective of nationality, race, colour, religion, sex or political views." Nominees must have had a distinguished international career.

Ho-Am Prizes
Recognizes individuals who have contributed to academics, the arts, and social development, or who have furthered the welfare of humanity through distinguished accomplishments in their respective professional fields.

Applicants must be Korean or of Korean heritage. 

Five awards annually recognize achievements in the following fields: Science, Engineering, Medicine, the Arts, and Community Service.

RSC College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists
Enables the participation of early- and mid-career faculty in the activities of the Royal Society of Canada. In an early stage in their career, members will have demonstrated a high level of achievement. The criterion for nomination is excellence, and membership is for seven years.
